Lens Eye Surgery is generally used to describe procedures that involve operating within the eye (intra-ocular) rather than on the surface, to either place an artificial implant to correct vision or replace the existing lens of the eye and adjust the prescription at the same time.

These procedures may be appropriate in certain cases where:

The prescription is too high or corneal profile (front of the eye) too complex to allow for corneal laser refractive surgery
There is already the development of visually significant cataracts (ageing lens of the eye)
There is a clinical benefit to an early cataract procedure (for example early lens changes combined with the shallow anterior chamber and high pressures)

Many clinics will offer you only intra-ocular surgery if you are over a certain age and fall within a certain category of prescription. Often this may be as a consequence of limitations of technology but may be presented as a better option suggesting it is “long-lasting” and you “won’t need glasses for reading either” or you “won’t need to have cataracts done later”.

We do see several thousands of patients who have been told elsewhere their only option is the most expensive lens replacement procedure, however many of these patients are too young to undergo such surgeries and it may not be clinically indicated.
