Lens Eye Surgery

Lens Eye Surgery is generally used to describe procedures that involve operating within the eye (intra-ocular) rather than on the surface, to either place an artificial implant to correct vision or replace the existing lens of the eye and adjust the prescription at the same time.

These procedures may be appropriate in certain cases where:

  • The prescription is too high or corneal profile (front of the eye) too complex to allow for corneal laser refractive surgery
  • There is already the development of visually significant cataracts (ageing lens of the eye)
  • There is a clinical benefit to an early cataract procedure (for example early lens changes combined with the shallow anterior chamber and high pressures)

Many clinics will offer you only intra-ocular surgery if you are over a certain age and fall within a certain category of prescription. Often this may be as a consequence of limitations of technology but may be presented as a better option suggesting it is “long-lasting” and you “won’t need glasses for reading either” or you “won’t need to have cataracts done later”.

We do see several thousands of patients who have been told elsewhere their only option is the most expensive lens replacement procedure, however many of these patients are too young to undergo such surgeries and it may not be clinically indicated. These patients have gone on to experience great freedom from their glasses and contact lenses through less invasive treatments and techniques, thanks to the larger range of prescriptions and profiles we are able to treat at AccuVision.

The AccuVision team do not have a ‘one size fits all’ approach and when you are seen by our experienced specialists, we will explain to you all the options available and advise on what may be best for you in the short term as well as long term. Our corneal and intra-ocular procedure specialists work together to guide you on what type of procedure will be of most benefit to you while helping you weigh up the potential risks and help you reach a decision with confidence.

A second opinion

We would recommend you speak with one of our Clinical Team to discuss your vision and requirements, at which point we may be better placed to guide you on what options are worth considering.

FAQs

Can You Have Lens Replacement Surgery More Than Once?
In most cases, lens replacement surgery is a one-time procedure. Once you’ve undergone lens replacement, the artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is intended to be a permanent correction. However, individual circumstances may vary, and it’s crucial to discuss any concerns with your eye care professional.
When Might Lens Replacement Surgery Not Be Suitable?

Lens replacement surgery may not be suitable for everyone. Factors such as underlying eye health, medical conditions, or lifestyle considerations can influence suitability. A comprehensive pre-operative assessment with your eye surgeon will determine your candidacy.

I Have Astigmatism, Am I Suitable For Lens Surgery?

Yes, lens replacement surgery can effectively address astigmatism. Toric intraocular lenses are designed to correct astigmatism during the procedure, providing clear vision for individuals with this common refractive error.

I Am Long-Sighted, Am I Suitable For Lens Surgery?
Lens replacement surgery is particularly effective for individuals with hyperopia or long-sightedness. The procedure involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial lens, correcting the refractive error and enhancing near and distance vision.
I Have Glaucoma, Am I Suitable For Lens Surgery?
Glaucoma can impact the suitability for lens replacement surgery. It is crucial to consult with your eye care specialist, as they will consider the severity of your glaucoma and overall eye health to determine the most appropriate course of action.
I Am Short-Sighted, Am I Suitable For Lens Surgery?
Lens replacement surgery is a viable option for individuals with myopia or short-sightedness who are unsuitable for laser eye surgery. The procedure can provide clear vision at various distances, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
Is There An Age Limit For Lens Replacement Surgery?
While there isn’t a strict age limit for lens replacement surgery, suitability depends more on your eye health and specific conditions rather than age. Many individuals enjoy the benefits of lens surgery in their 50s, 60s, and beyond.
