Find out how AccuVision’s bespoke Keratoconus treatment plans could help optimise your vision

What is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus is a condition causing progressive thinning of the cornea, leading to decreased quality of vision.

A specialist approach to treatment

The AccuVision team have been helping to treat and manage a host of aware long term keratoconus patients for over 20 years. Tailored treatment plans, both for surgical options where appropriate, and long term management have helped our patients meet their vision goals.

A patient’s journey

Claire has been under the care of the AccuVision team for almost 5 years.

Her journey with us began when she started looking for specialist options further afield, having been turned away locally as untreatable.

As with many patients, one eye had progressed more than the other and our aim from the start was to work on a treatment plan tailored to her corneal profile and vision needs, so that we could offer her effective, long term solutions for better quality of vision and quality of life.

Claire’s Keratoconus was impacting her daily life, affecting her ability to work and live independently.

“Before my treatment I had difficulty dealing with many everyday activities and also took the decision to stop driving. I was struggling at work and with simple tasks such as reading signs, using public transport and shopping. I felt nervous and anxious if I was going somewhere unfamiliar. Having limited vision had a massive impact on my confidence and quality of life”.

Treatment path

The first step was to get her functional eye as stable and improved as possible. With extensive diagnostics and a specialist surgical plan, Claire underwent Corneal Collagen Cross-linking combined with advanced Topography guided (T-CAT) re-profiling of her cornea to reduce the distortion impacting her vision and attempt to halt the progression of her Keratoconus. Preoperatively, her right eye was counting fingers vision unaided, with a complex prescription of -6.00 myopia and -5.50 astigmatism.

Lifechanging results

After surgery, she has achieved 6/9+ (approximately driving standards) unaided vision in this eye, and with minor prescription correction with glasses sees 6/6 (20/20) on the chart.

Claire later proceeded to treatment for her worse eye, which, being more advanced required a corneal transplant. Although a longer recovery, the expertise of her surgical team meant that Claire could actually start to use and get functional input from this eye, which had stopped contributing to her vision completely for many years.

The results have been life-changing for Claire: “Since having my treatment being able to drive again is the biggest thing for me and has helped to get my confidence and independence back. It’s the small things that you notice day to day like reading and watching TV as well as being able to go out and not rely on others so much. Having restricted vision affected my life for too long and I would say to anyone don’t hesitate to speak to the Accuvision team about treatment options”.

AccuVision’s bespoke eye care

For a condition that is known to be progressive, with complex variations in presentation and underlying co-factors, our team have for a long time understood that a one size fits all care pathway simply does not do our patients justice.

The earlier the condition is picked up and managed, the more potential there is for retaining and maximising visual function, thus preventing it from having the negative impact on young eyes that it does. To quote the mother of one of our patients, “this is a disease that robs young people of their most precious years and as a result their potential. I didn’t want that for my son.”

Expert screening and timely care can really improve the possibilities.
